Penang – Mum’s Nyonya Cuisine

Last Day in Penang and after a durian brunch, we headed to Mum’s Nyonya Cuisine for lunch.

The restaurant is actually nestled in a row of houses and you can spot it by its purple signage at the door.

Colourful ribbons greets us as we enter the main door into the aircon area.

View of the interior taken after the guests left.

Exploring the many newspapers articles on the wall. Lots of celebrities have been here including Singapore’s Golden Girl – Joscelin Yeo!

Chua Lam 蔡瀾 was here too!

Very intricate hand-sewn Kebaya nicely framed up as display in the restuarant.

Another beautiful purple colour one

A piece of wedding jewellery?

Back to food. The Menu. It used to be called Mama’s Nyonya Cuisine but has been renamed Mum’s Nyonya Cuisine.

“.. each morsel of food we convey to our lips – is a blessing. The ability and the opportunity to enjoy food is something that fortune bestows on the diner…That every single item on the menu is nothing less than top echelon in terms of flavour, fragrance and quality… .. Bon Appetit!”

Menu – Fish and Prawn

Menu – Prawn and Chicken

Menu – Pork and Rendang

Menu – Vegetables

Menu – Vegetables, Kerabu and Soup

Nutmeg Juice RM2.50 and Chrysanthemum Tea RM2.50 without sugar. Refreshing!

Rice was dished out by the waitress in a big bowl according to how much you want and chargeable at RM2 per pax.

My mouthful of rice.

You really need some to go with the nice gravy of the Nyonya dishes. For big rice eaters, I bet you can eat bowls and bowls of rice just with the gravy.

Jiu Hu Char (Shredded Cuttle-Fish with Sliced Turnip), Regular, RM12

This is a Chinese New Year Dish of shredded cuttle-fish and thinly sliced turnip served with sambal belacan. Though I did not taste much of the cuttlefish, I quite like it for its savouriness and texture.

Kerabu Kacang Botol (Nyonya-style Four-angled Bean Sprout Salad) , Regular, RM10

Very crunchy, a bit spicy but very shiok.

Tau Yew Bak (Pork in Black Soy Suace), Regular, RM20

This is pork cooked in black soy sauce with a lingering peppery taste served with hard-boiled eggs. The sauce is so fragrant and delicious on the rice! We supplemented it with bean curd (regular RM1) but was pretty disappointed as the beancurd felt  as if it was freshly cut and added to the dish, that is, it did not soak up the yummilious sauce.

Beef Rendang (Beef in Mixed Spices), Regular, RM20.

Otak-Otak (1 piece), RM4

Tearing apart the banana leaves to reveal the fish and spices paste inside.

Nyonya’s otak is different from the otak that we usually eat as the spices used are quite different. You either love or hate it. I do not mind it but find it a tad spicy.

Choon Piah (Nyonya-style Deep-fried Spring Roll) , 2 rolls per set,  RM9

This is local crepe stuffed with chopped turnip, prawns and crabmeat served with a special sauce. The ingredients seems similar to the Ju Hu Char as the main bulk is turnip, just that that was sliced and this is chopped. Dip the spring roll into a little of the special sauce and the flavour instantly changes! Like! If I am not wrong. there is some mustard/wasabi in that special sauce that lifts up the flavour. 🙂

After a long wait, our Tu Thor Th’ng (Pig Stomach Soup), Regular RM22, arrived.

Lots of pig stomach in there!

I an not a big fan of pork stomach and hence requested for soup only when the big bowl of soup was divided but was still given one slice to try. Look at how thick the stomach is and I am surprised at how nice it is! The soup taste like what mum would have cooked too with just the right amount of peppercorns that would leave your stomach with a warm fuzzy feeling. Must order when you are here!

This is probably the healthiest meal we had in the entire Penang trip with plenty of vegetables and the taste felt like what Mum can cook. Our total bill came up to RM128.15 (~SGD 46.26) for 5 pax which is considered very cheap for Singaporeans! For Malaysians, this would be the standard restaurant price?

Do remember to make a reservation before heading down to avoid disappointment 🙂
