Celebrating the seventh day of the Lunar New Year which is also know as everyone’s birthday 人日 at Chao San Lin. This is my 2nd year here during CNY and their business is still as bustling as ever with the restaurant fully packed and a long wait for the food despite the heavy downpour. If you are looking to have your food quickly served during CNY, this may not be the restaurant to go though they do serve really authentic Teochew cuisine.
First up, Teochew Style Yu Sheng.
Served with jelly fish and abalone and drizzled with plum sauce, this is one very refreshing yusheng that I would not mind eating again and again though I am not a big fan of abalone.
Close up of the nicely tossed and soaked shredded radish, carrot, cucumber(not sure), pickled vegetables, etc and the abalone that was so tender.
One special ingredient in this yusheng is starfruit and a special kind of parsley which I do not know the name in chinese. In Teochew, it is called “kng-cai”. Some people do not like the taste of this parsley (as do all parsley) but I feel that this one balanced out very well with all the ingredients. MUST-TRY.
Braised Goose and Tau Kwa
Close up of the thinly sliced goose and the firm beancurd which unfortunately was a little “under-braised” 😛
Prawn Balls
First time eating this. Very firm and dionk dionk!
Oyster Omelette
Steamed Threadfin fishtail
Very meaty and I like the cai por on top. The soup was very clear and very nice to drink 😛
One special vegetable with prawns which I have forgotten the name! 😛 As I was told, this vegetable is usually eaten during the new year as it is only found towards the end of winter and beginning of spring. To me, it tasted like very well cooked leeks which all of us love.
Olive rice.
Not too bad but we felt the kway teow is better.
Liver Ngoh Hiang served with pickled cucumber, carrots and radish.

Dip it with the sweet suace and this dish probably grows on you. Not many places serve this dish nowadays. If you do not like the gamey taste, cleanse your palate with the ah char provided.
Chestnut Pancake
We always have this when we are here.
Crunchy chestnuts nestled in the mochi like batter and scattered with grounded peanuts. YUMs!

Our total bill came close to $300 which may be a tad ex but to be able to enjoy delicious Teochew cuisine in the heart of CBD made from a hao-lian (teochew for proud) Teochew, the value far exceeds the dollar and cents.
