Plate Weekday Semi-Buffet Lunch @ Carlton City Hotel

Nasi Kampung with crispy chicken grilled satay and prawn crackers. Looks good isnt it? 🙂

It is always a headache having to hunt for food places that can cater to big groups and having the food variety that can please everyone. Where can we go for a decent lunch treat for the entire team that is near office and yet does not cause everyone to fall asleep after the heavy lunch? A semi-buffet lunch sounds like a good idea and coupled with a chef’s selection of main course, that will ensure that no one will complain that he/she is hungry. 😛

Carlton City Hotel is opened at Gopeng Street for close to a year (nearest MRT  Tanjong Pagar MRT, green line)  and we have been saying that we will pop in for lunch one day and we finally did today. I love the beautiful chandelier and the high ceiling at the lobby but due to the expanse of the place, I could not fit it into my iphone frame from the main entrance hence no pic to show here. You should visit the hotel to see it for yourself! 😛

We took the first lift we saw to Level 3 where Plate was located. Was a little lost as people started turning left to the pool side to look for the restaurant. On hind sight, that lift may be for staff use? There are 4 proper ones that will bring you to the level 3 along the correct way to the restaurant (the hotel guests way) 🙂

The sun-tan chairs right outside the restaurant that greeted us.

The interior of the restaurant with the entrance shown in the middle of the pic once we got to the correct way and into the restaurant. It is very spacious and the decor and mood of the place makes you feel relaxed immediately.

Another view of the interior with sofa seats and wall decors that look so pretty in our photos.

Back to the food, you can opt for the semi-buffet lunch at $25++ or a semi-buffet lunch+ Selection of Chef’s Lunch Portion Main Course at $30++ per person.  For an extra $5++, you get to choose a main course from the chef’s selection. The chef’s selection for this week includes Tagliatele Pasta al Pesto with Cruustaceans, Salmon Fillet with Filo Pastry, Green Peas and Portobello Mushroom, Asian-style Chicken Thigh with Roasted Sweet Potato and Corn on CobNasi Kampung with Crispy Chicken, Grilled Satay and Prawn Crackers or Curry Pork Ribs with Potatoes, Crackers and Fragant Rice. Pretty good deal and all of us ordered a main course and proceeded for the semi-buffet while our main course is being prepared.

First stop – Fresh seafood.

Close up of the fresh prawns. Succulent and sweet!

Half-shelf scallops. As I had a overdose of scallops from Hokkaido, I did not try this though it looks good too.

Green mussels. I am not a mussels fan so skipped this as well to keep space for my main course 😛

I am surprised to see that they have clams too.

Next, the Japanese section.

Close up of the Yaki Toufu with lump fish roe and Soba. My eyes were on the soba but by the time I wanted to take, it was gone and replaced by edamame! So sad…

Sashimi – The replenishing of the sashimi was pretty efficient as we had some salmon sashimi monsters in the group.

Assorted sushi and maki

The next section of the semi-buffet

Starters beside the salad counter

Baby Squid Salad with Pomegranate – 2 of my favourites , baby squids and promengranate, together! If the baby squid had been more crispy, this would be my favourite starter!

Satay Fish and Achar Salad – A very local flavour here. A pity the satay fish was not very crispy too.

Baked Mushroom Tart with Cheese – Cheesy is the word.. LOL

Salmon Salad

This should be a smoke duck salad ( i missed reading the description). In my hurry to take some marinated baby octupus with wakame and sesame, i missed taking a photo of the dish. 😛

Red Bean pancake

There are 2 soups available  – Crabmeat Soup and Potato with smoked chicken soup

The portion of crabmeat soup that I told. Taste quite nice but I did not spot any crab meat though.. 🙁

Bread and butter pudding. Not too sure if there was cheese in it but the dairy smell was a little strong.

Beside this dish was a red bean soup which my colleague said was nice. I saw that they added orange peel in it too but was too full to try

The bread, ice cream  and beverage (coffee and tea) section

The Frosty Ice cream in strawberry, chocolate and vanilla flavours

Selection of Dilmah tea

Chocolate Fondue and bread.

Close up of the fountain. Dunno why the fondue fountain was not flowing.

Almost missed this yummy chicken and mushroom quesadilla! Beside it is egg plant and lady’s finger tempura.

Fruits, assortment of mini-cakes and Cheese Plate

Nicely cut and very sweet fruits! The melon goes very well with the camembert cheese!

Mini Cakes

Mini cakes

Cake pudding?

Very cute salt and pepper shaker on the table

My starter

The Nasi Kampung with crispy chicken, grilled satay and prawn crackers  main recommended by the service staff (if you take spicy food)

Another view

Close up of the crispy chicken. There was only one piece of crispy and juicy drumlet/mid-joint on each plate.  We wished there were more!

Close up of the grilled satay. It was meaty, juicy and delicious! Like!

Close up of the Nasi Kampung ( stir-fried rice). It was not spicy to me and I feel that they can add more spiciness to it to make it more local 😉

Another chef’s selection – Salmon Fillet with Filo Pastry, Green Peas and Portobello Mushroom

Side view and close up of the salmon. Looks so pretty and from what I heard, tasted good too!

My 2nd round of the buffet. Glad that I took the quesadilla though I was almost full from my nasi kampung!

View of the restaurant from the drinks section

My coffee. Aromatic but very bitter. Perhaps I had too much of the sweet sweet stuff. 😛

Overall, a nice and relax dining experience with a decent variety of food. I hope that they can consider serving more hot food or have some stir-fry vegetables so that we can get a more balanced meal. Service was very prompt and polite and all requests were met with a smile.  With the current credit card promotion, it makes the lunch really value for money!  With Maybank Credit Card Promotion, one dines free with every 2 diners. With ANZ, one dines free with 3 paying diners.

Will definitely be back to try the food that I did not eat today! Perhaps can consider luring PB to go for the Seafood & Wok Friday Buffet Dinner where you will be served with one whole Boston lobster for every two adult diners! 😉
