Penang – Yong Tau Foo (YTF) 檳城釀豆腐 @ Padang Brown Hawker Center

After checking in at our hotel and taking a mini-break, we are off to more food! This time, it is 2 “basins” full of Yong Tau Foo (YTF) at Padang Brown Hawker Center which has been recently renovated.

The YTF Stall

Many of the stalls at the food center are not opened for business yet as it is way too early for dinner

Amazed by the variety available

Left the job of picking the ingredients to my travel companions and this was selected! If I am in Singapore, I would probably freak out at this but since I am overseas, I will try. Furthermore, I am with a pack of foodies who eat almost everything so I get to try a bit of everything! 😛

Look at the huge cai xin in the pot. Something you do not get in SG too

Another view of the ingredients at the stall and the blue bowls of orders waiting to be prepared.

Basically, you just pick a bowl and a tong and pick whatever you want before handing over to the Auntie to blanch it in the soup.

1/2 bowls of our RM64 (~SGD23.10) YTF!

There are big and small intestines, plenty of pig’s blood (something that you can no longer find in Singapore), deep-fried pig’s ears, lady’s finger, bittergourd, caixin, salted vegetable, beancurd, fish maw, pig skin, chilli with fish paste, fish balls, meat balls, cuttlefish, etc. I think almost everything at the stall is in this bowl!

2/2 bowls of the ingredients.

I tried picking out a little of everything in the 2 big bowls but before I am done, my baby bowl is already full!!!!! That was how much we ordered and this was only for TEA but we polished it all off!

Properly cleaned and no pig smell at all. Thumbs up! All of us love the soup as it is reminisce of those we had during our childhood – what people refer to as 古早味 nowadays.

Around us were tables of Lok Lok waiting for their customers.

Pricing for the lok lok, accordingly to colours on the sticks

The lok lok here is different from the ones in Malacca as you cook the ingredients in the pot of water and then dip in to the satay sauce. In Malacca, you cook the ingredients in the satay sauce and eat it coated with it. We were so tempted but controlled ourselves as we need to keep stomach space for our seafood dinner!

Good place to come for a variety of local food at a place that looks similar in context to our Newton Circus Food Centre and the layout is similar to that of Farrer Food Center.
